In 2017, Adam’s Gardens and Farm’s (AGF) founder Hanaan Kambo noticed that the 1-acre backyard of her late father’s house in Gbendembu, Freetown, Sierra Leone had become unrecognizable. Rainy conditions had turned the yard into a swamp which had become a popular spot for trash dumping. Hanaan decided to take action to beautify the yard. She worked with her husband, Sam Kambo, to thoroughly clean the yard and start a garden, first planting leafy greens, beans, and herbs.
This eventually led to the creation of Adam’s Gardens and Farm, a year-round agribusiness. The farm now stretches over 20 acres and boasts more than 25 greenhouses, producing over 20 varieties of crops. AGF has created many jobs for locals, including women and youth. AGF is grateful for the generous funding provided by the World Bank and the UNDP Growth ACCelerator Programme. This funding has helped the Kambos build more greenhouses, employ 30 and counting permanent workers, and install a solar energy system that powers the farm 24 hours a day.
